So how was the food?

I must say the standard was high. The evening organised by the PPE Society at Warwick University was held at Chesford Grange Hotel.

The spiraling stairs twinned on opposite sides of a distinct rainbow of black and gold balloons. 15 round tables were quickly trafficking with buzzing personalities, each dressed at their best. Some with masks purchased on the day, borrowed from friends, even bought from sex shops! Mine was bought on the day by my friend who I must say, made a better choice than I would have in picking it!

The masks were on…

After a quick reception where the champagne glasses were running low – a few guests had big nerves for the event and requested two, in so far as there were no glasses left for others, I had to share my kind friend’s glass.

As I looked at the sitting plan, a sneaky worry traveled through my body; my ticket for the night was sold to me by someone who couldn’t attend the event himself, so they might have missed my name out of the list of tonight’s guests. Fortunately, after a third, close observation, I was sitting nowhere else but with the friends I had hoped (and asked) to be seated with!

Our table was right at the end of the dining hall, and although comfortably private, it proved a bit of a nuisance as we were sitting too close to the band and the music was too loud which resulted in us having slightly shouted conversations across the table – haha! But no worries, the champagne quickly filled everyone – several bottles per table, and must I add, it helped me develop a taste for it!

They carefully had name tags for each seat, and a little note with the dietary requirements: at the bottom of mine, the word “vegan” was spelled out.

I came to realise I had never been to such an exquisite event before, when surprise overwhelmed me as a result of the waiters laying the table cloths on our knees for us. The extent to which I had seen such an etiquette (in movies only!) ceased at the point where the guest dining performs actions to oneself – unlike by the waiter! It was quite wonderful.

But now, down to the food… the VEGAN food. The first course was tomato soup with spices, bread and flower shaped butter (which I did not touch)…

For main, the non veg version was completely different; fish with two small potatoes – vegan or not, our option was better! Mushroom risotto with rocket…

And now the dessert… well funny story. As they approached with the option of crème brûlée, I was almost jumping out of my skin at the thought that they went out to make a vegan option of it – which would be easily achievable with the egg replacers and one of the 7 vegan milks. But we know how much pride the French take in their cuisine…

…and before I had time to take this glorious photo of what I then thought would be a proud vegan crème brûlée for my blog, for you my lovely readers, the waiter comes and takes it away, putting a bowl of fruit in front of me, whilst quietly apologizing for the mix-up. I have a feeling he sensed my excitement whilst taking the photo and felt embarrassed too. Well… so here is my fruit bowl: grapes, pineapple, melon and oranges. Both me and my vegan friend who was there laughed over our anticlimactic experience, offering everyone fruits from our fruit bowls. Here’s the said fruit bowl:
